Pacaya Airlift

The mission of Mercy Wings International (MWI) is to extend and speed the vision of Living Water Teaching (LWT).

To that end, aircraft are pressed into service, giving greater reach and speed to ministry workers and teachers.

Many times those in need are located in very remote areas.  The area north of Quetzaltenango in the department of Quiche and is populated by indigenous Maya.

To reach these areas one must travel first within the unreliable and often dangerous (chicken) bus system.  A typical bus will be grossly overloaded, in the poorest of mechanical condition, and driven at breakneck speeds on roads that are barely passable.  if this were not enough it is very common to be robbed at gunpoint while on secluded stretches.  It will take 5 hours to reach the pictured village of Nebaj.  The same trip from our mission base in Quetzaltenango is 20 minutes.

The terrain is forbidding and being such can divide cultures.  For example the people of Nebaj speak a different dialect of the same language than does the municipality just 20 Km away.
